IKEA NEW ZEALAND SIGNS AGREEMENT FOR SALE AND PURCHASE OF REAL ESTATE WITH KIWI PROPERTY GROUP

1 December 2021

Agreement signals an important step in bringing IKEA to New Zealand

IKEA New Zealand has signed an Agreement for Sale and Purchase of Real Estate with Kiwi Property Group. The agreement between both parties was signed on 30 November 2021.

The agreement commences the process for the Sale and Purchase of the subject land at Sylvia Park in Auckland with Kiwi Property Group, once all conditions of the agreement are satisfied.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has presented unforeseen challenges and developments, the intention has always been for IKEA to enter the New Zealand market in a good way. This has included identifying the best locations for future stores and customer meeting points. That is why IKEA is working in partnership with Kiwi Property Group, with their proven retail experience and expertise, to enable us to bring IKEA to the many New Zealanders in the best way possible.

Mirja Viinanen, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer for IKEA New Zealand says, “At IKEA, our vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people. Since we announced our intention to enter the market, the response from New Zealanders has been overwhelmingly positive. The signing of the Agreement for Sale and Purchase of Real Estate with Kiwi Property Group is an important step in making this a reality.”

“We look forward to sharing more details of our plans and timings to bring IKEA to the many New Zealanders in the near future.”

Clive Mackenzie, Chief Executive Officer for Kiwi Property Group says, “We’re excited to be taking this important step towards having an IKEA presence at Sylvia Park. Our goal is to reinforce the centre’s standing as New Zealand’s leading shopping destination, attracting customers from around the country. We look forward to working together with IKEA New Zealand.”

Q & A

Where will the first store in New Zealand be?

Our move to New Zealand will involve both stores and e-commerce to make IKEA accessible to all of New Zealand during its launch.

We plan to open an IKEA pop-up six months prior to store opening, to give consumers a taste of what’s to come.

While exact locations are currently not confirmed and timings are being finalised, there are plans to open three customer meeting points during the launch period.  These include a full-sized IKEA store in the greater Auckland area where people can access the full IKEA range and have the complete shopping experience, a planning studio in Wellington and a second smaller-format store in Christchurch.  IKEA will also launch its full online offer during this period.

When is it planned to open?

The full IKEA shopping experience – with a physical store and online offer – will open in the next few years.

Prior to our first store opening, we will open a smaller pop-up so consumers can get a taste of what’s to come.

Information on exact timing will be shared when our plans are more concrete.

How big is the store?

That is still under development, to give you some idea of the size of the store, a standard IKEA store is 30, 000 sqm2

Will New Zealand get the whole range?

IKEA has developed a very wide range over 75 years of more than 7000 mandatory products designed for all areas of the home. This range will be available to customers in New Zealand, along with an IKEA Food offering.

When are you hiring and what roles are available?

Hundreds staff are needed across all areas of the store, including the furniture showroom, check-outs, sales, IKEA restaurant, children’s play areas, the warehouse, as well as positions in interior design, visual merchandising and management. Recruitment dates will be announced closer to the time.

How many new jobs will be created in New Zealand?

Hundreds of jobs will be created with IKEA in New Zealand, both directly and indirectly. We won’t be recruiting immediately, however, if you are interested in a career with IKEA, more information can be found online.
